Louis de Wohl, Founded Upon Rock (1961) (a quick one volume history; not comprehensive, but very engaging)

Russell Shaw, American Church: The Remarkable Rise, Meteoric Fall, and Uncertain Future of Catholicism in America (2013) (a commentary on the relationship between the Catholic Church and American Society)

Patrick Carey, Catholicism in America (2004) (leans slightly towards modernism) John Tracy Ellis, American Catholicism (1956) (a classic of the time)

Theodore Maynard, The Story of American Catholicism (1943) (another old classic; may be difficult to obtain)

Anne Carrol, Christ in the Americas (1997) (a high school textbook; solid Catholic perspective; sometimes rather triumphalistic)

Jay Dolan, The American Catholic Experience (1985) (with reservations; leans heavily in the moderist direction)
